How To Tell The Difference Between Wasps And Bees
Bee Behaviour
Bees will tend to be found on plants flowers or hovering around water areas or close to their nest or hive. They rarely bother humans unless we are around the plants they are on or in their flight path for some reason.
Bees pollinate plants which allows plants to breed. This is important for food production as well as trees and all other plants survival. It is important not to kill bees unless it is absolutely necessary.
Bee Appearance
Honey Bees which are often mistaken for wasps have darker yellow and dark brown stripes compared to a wasp.
Honey bees have a more rounded appearance and the whole of the body of the insect is roughly the same width from end to end.
Wasp Behaviour
Common Wasps are quite often found nesting around humans in houses or outbuildings and usually make themselves known from June through to late September.
They are attracted to sweet items like jam or fruits and can often be found around bins. They can harass people who are eating or drinking outside or may enter kitchens to look for food sources.
Wasp Appearance
Wasps have much brighter markings than bees they are yellow and black stripes that are quite thin in comparison to those of the honey bee.
The shape of a wasp is much more pointy than a bee and wasps have a very pronounced waist.
From a distance a wasp will look more yellow than a bee.
Other Similar Insects
There are many types of both wasps and bees in the UK. Many types of wasps will not cause issues and bees should not be killed unless there is an immediate danger caused by their presence.
Bees should be dealt with by an experienced bee keeper who may be able to re home them.
